The house-museum

On Tuesday, May 11, we visited an old house-museum in Winsted. It was a property of Rockwell family, important people in Winsted's society of those days. A part of it was built in 18 century (imagine that!). It's old, but really beautiful building. It seemed that the house radiated the warm calmness and spirit of those days...

We weren't less fascinated when we actually entered the house. Everything there is soaked with pure historical magic of the times,when people were attending balls, reading was a privilege and electricity was something unknown. This house belonged to the rich family, so we could see the top of American society's way of living.

My eyes caught the table in the dining room: obviously expensive dishes, utensils etc. You can feel a loving hand of mistress of the house in those perfectly chosen plates and cups...

On the upper floor we saw masters' and kids' bedrooms. Delicate bed coverings and tastefully picked decorations let us know the level of wealthhiness of people who lived in the house. This particular night stand I spoted in the girl's bedroom and was impressed with its charming elegance and tender uniqueness. Those roses and a little crisp piece of white linen captured my heart. That's why I loved it so much.

We were leaving this museum with our minds filled with a lot of things to think about, make conclusions and to remember forever, such as people of earlier time's height, their way of self-education and decoration the place where they live. I would like to thank our teachers for organizing this trip and ladies from the museum for showing us around and lifting a curtain from the mystery of days when Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe lived and wrote. Thank you with all my heart!

Our tours on Tuesday May 11, 2010

Once again we lucked out on the weather for this tour. Seeing this beautiful old house with all of it's history was probably our favorite tour. The old dishes, clothing, and the Civil War collection made us feel as if we were living back then! The tour guides were wonderful and answered all of our questions. We hated to leave.
Our tour of The Soldiers Civil War Monument was a great adventure, also. There were a lot of people from this area in The Civil War. We got to climb the stairs up to the roof. The stairs were very narrow and steep but the view from the top was beautiful. So many mountains. Steve was a wonderful tour guide. Jackie and Fiordaliza sent a warm thank you note to him. What a great day!

Civil War Monument

We want to thank Steve Sylvester for the wonderful tour of the Civil War monument.

Who knew that this imposing granite Gothic Revival Tower was right here in Winchester!

We climbed to the top of the tower and could see the Town of Winchester and the City of Winsted.

The monument was built to honor the men from Winsted and Winchester who served in the Civil war.

It is a wonderful place to visit and the site is perfect for a picnic.

Cultural Care Au Pair Nomination

This is one of the greatest experiences I've ever lived.

Since I came, I felt so small in this new world and I didn't know what was going to happen with me during my year.

My new host family received me with the arms wide open, even when both knew we will shared a whole year living under the same roof.

Well, the time passed by so fast and we knew each other so well, after talk about to extend my year with them again, I was so looking forward to seeing my folks again, my family, my friends, because that's the place where I belong to.

I just simply couldn't say goodbye, I wasn't ready yet and I had the feeling to stay over for a second year with them, I can't complain about all this because I've been happy after all, of course missing my people down in Mexico but what comes around, goes around and everything has to end for any reason, my second year is almost done and I'm more than halfway, just counting down the days make me feel nervious, impatient, happy and sad.

It's a weird feeling that I'm loving it!!

Class today

Today I had to make a hard decision! I had to choose to send a firefighter in a burning house with an old lady inside or because of the possible collaps of the house don't send him in and safe the old lady. I really couldn't made a decision!
Then I learned something about Cesar Chavez. He was a right fighter for farmworkers in the 1960ties. He changed the workconditions for the farmworkers, that was a huge step!

Historical Society

I learned about the people who lived in Winsted a hundred years ago. These hair combs were used by the ladies. That was very interesting and I had a good time.

Police Department

! Hello!
This is the Citizenship class when we went to the police department. We went in a group with the teacher. The policeman was talking about different things in the Police Department. For example they had three jail cells, one for women and two for men. They had two rooms for finger printing and one for pictures, they had a big cabinet for the gun and rifles.

Soldiers Monument

The Soldiers Monument is a really nice place to visit. Is been keep nice to be so old, even thou there are something that has to be replace. But overal it looks good.

Two weeks ago we took a trip to the Soldier 's monument in Winsted. The monument is important to everybody because it shows the soldiers who fought in the Civil War for the north. We were happy and enjoyed the trip.

The visit to the historical society was very insteresting for me. Because I learned a lot of information about how the people in the town of Winsted live.

Police Department in Winsted

Visiting the Police Department was very exciting for all students and me. We met a very nice and friendly policeman who showed us every room in the building like jail in which can fit about six people and its separated for men and women.The policeman told us about the hard work they have to do outside the department involving paperwork. At the end of the trip some people took a few pictures with the policeman and we all left the department hoping to visit again but just for the next tour:)

A very handsome policeman and me. He was a very nice man, he told us a lot of interesting stories, showed us all the places inside the building like the rooms where they gave you breathhalizer test and the jail cells. He told us how the work actually is, how important the paper work is and writing the reports which is 80% of his duties. I really enjoyed the trip:)

The Police Dept. and the Radar Gun

In the morning of May 3, we visited the Police Dept. We learned very much about the policeman's job-arresting criminals, drunk driving, handling car accidents. And they also handle problems with your noisy neighbor, or a barking dog, etc. They are really really busy.

This is the first time I saw a radar gun. The policeman uses the radar gun to measure the speed of cars. If you are over the speed limit, they will stop you and give you a ticket. Oh~, this radar gun makes my uncle contribute to the government very much. (hahaha...)

It was a very nice field study.
