Cemetery Pictures

Thank you Marlene for taking great pictures in the Old Winsted Burying Ground. Veterans of the Civil War are buried here as well as other veterans. We recognized some local family names on the monuments. This is an obelisk, one of many in this cemetery. This was just a beginning in understanding the history of Winsted and the surrounding communities.

cemetery

Thanks Lynn for all of your work on making this tour of the cemetery meaningful to our students. A good time was had by all.
It was truly a learning experience for me, also. Not only did I see my mother's family monument, but also the grave markers of my great grandmother and grandfather, my grandfather and grandmother, and my uncle and aunt. I found out that my grandfather fought in World War I, never knew that bit of information.

Colonial Greens

We talked about life in Colonial New England.Farming was carried out side the village. Puritan settlers brought this pattern with them from England. often brought the names of English villages as well. Boston, Salem, Groton , Hartford, Torrington and Winchester are some of the New England towns named after English towns.

Walking Tour 4-8-10

Everyone seemed to enjoy the visit to the green, The First Church of Winsted, and the Winsted Old Burying Ground. Of particular interest were the war monuments in the green, the beautiful windows in the church, and the older graves and names in the cemetery. Most of the students were impressed with the history of Winsted. The weather was beautiful for the walk and it was fun to have the GED class join us.

I learned today about the common or green in colonial NEW ENGLAND. The people put the dogs that barked in church outside.and dog curle up at his masters feet helped keep him warm, too.
When somebody needed to build a house, they all worked together. They were a community like our college
